York Area Meeting maintains a Quaker burial ground located at the Retreat in York, where burials, interments and the scattering of ashes can be arranged.

The burial ground is maintained on behalf of our meeting by staff of the Retreat, and can be visited by Friends without advance notice.

York Quaker Burial Ground Committee supervises the upkeep of the burial grounds, record-keeping, agrees the charges and is responsible for questions of administration.

A historic Quaker burial ground dating from 1667 is located in Bishophill, in the grounds of Tuke House.

Other Quaker burial grounds available near York are in the care of York Area Meeting. For further information, see the Area Meeting leaflet (available on this page).

Such uniformity is preserved … as may effectively guard against any distinction being made in that place between the rich and the poor.
