Overseers help create a sense of community and friendship in meetings.
Overseers have a wide variety of responsibilities, set out in detail in Quaker Faith & Practice. In a Quaker sense, oversight is the providing of pastoral and practical care and support. Each overseer tries to maintain a supportive relationship with a number of members of the meeting. Each Friend or attender has a personal, dedicated overseer.
Overseers also guide and advise newcomers about matters of members.

Our life is love, and peace, and tenderness; and bearing one with another, and forgiving one another, … and helping one another up with a tender hand.
