York Friends Central Adult School Trust

The trust, which is a registered charity, was set up by members of York Preparative Meeting of the Society of Friends in 1927. The purpose was to more effectively administer an earlier charity, "The Friends Central Adult School and Cottage", which had been set up in 1875. This trust exists in order to support providers of adult education in its broadest sense to organisations within ten miles of York.

To qualify for a grant an organisation must:

  1. provide opportunities for self development that have not been available in childhood, or
  2. provide opportunities that encompass not only basic education, but which open horizons, develop confidence and allow people to examine their beliefs and ideas, or
  3. provide opportunities to develop ideas of community and concern for others, and make it possible to put these ideas into action.

The trust regrets that it cannot make grants to individuals.

To make a grant apply in writing giving as much information as possible to:
The Clerk, YFCAST,
Anthony Still,
27 Barbers Drive,

2006 Annual Report

In April we noted the retirement of Pat Brighton, after many years of service as a trustee and latterly as Chairperson. The current Trustees are John Batchelor, Bill Eve, Stephen Pittam, Pauline MacNeil, Jo Reilly, Anthony Still, Julia Terry and Isabel Wakeman. Pauline MacNeil is the new Chairperson and Anthony Still remains as Clerk.

The complexity of Charity Law requirements is leading us to consider the possibility of linking the trust to The Community Fund for better administration.

Income: A buoyant stock market meant there was £2,825 to distribute in 2006.

Grants: We have refined our grant making process so as to ensure that the grants support process, rather than products and that they have a tangible effect. We made nine grants, totalling £2,730 and carried forward a surplus to be added to the fund for distribution in 2007. During the current year the Trust supported:

Yearsley Bridge Gateway Club £500

York University Quiet Place £280 [carried forward]

York Alternatives to Violence Project £500

York Rape Crisis £500

York Centre for Global Education [2 grants] £200

One Parent Families £200

Accessible Arts £500

Low Moor Community Allotment £50
